• Fluorodopa (18F) is a fluorinated analogue of L‑DOPA that crosses the blood‑brain barrier via the large neutral amino‑acid transporter. Within dopaminergic neurons it is decarboxylated by aromatic L‑amino‑acid decarboxylase to fluorodopamine, which is stored in synaptic vesicles. The accumulated radio‑fluorine emits positrons detectable by PET, allowing visualization of regional dopamine synthesis and turnover. The tracer’s kinetic profile reflects the activity of the dopamine synthesis pathway, making it a sensitive marker for neuronal integrity.

Fluorodopa is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur following intravenous administration.
