Ibanate (Ibandronic Acid)

Ibanate, a bisphosphonate, is used in the management of osteoporosis and related fracture risk.

• Postmenopausal osteoporosis: improves bone mineral density and reduces the risk of vertebral and non‑vertebral fractures.

• Ibandronic Acid binds to hydroxyapatite crystals on bone surfaces and is taken up by osteoclasts during bone resorption. Inside osteoclasts it inhibits the enzyme farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase, disrupting the mevalonate pathway, which impairs prenylation of small G‑proteins essential for osteoclast function, leading to reduced bone resorption and increased bone mineral density. The selective inhibition results in a net gain in skeletal mass over time.

Common Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal irritation: dyspepsia, abdominal pain, or nausea.
