Ibandronic Acid is a bisphosphonate that acts on bone remodeling to treat several skeletal disorders.

• Postmenopausal osteoporosis: reduces bone resorption and increases bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

• Ibandronic Acid binds avidly to hydroxyapatite crystals on bone surfaces. When osteoclasts attach to the drug‑coated bone, the bisphosphonate is internalized, inhibiting farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase in the mevalonate pathway. This disruption induces osteoclast apoptosis and markedly reduces bone resorption, leading to a net gain in bone mass. The high affinity for bone mineral provides a prolonged skeletal reservoir, allowing intermittent dosing while maintaining therapeutic effect.

Ibandronic Acid may be associated with a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to severe.

Common Side Effects

• Flu-like symptoms: transient fever, chills, and muscle aches after infusion.
• Musculoskeletal pain: joint or bone discomfort.
• Nausea or vomiting.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Renal impairment: elevated creatinine or acute kidney injury.
• Osteonecrosis of the jaw: exposed bone in the oral cavity.
• Severe hypocalcemia: low blood calcium levels.
