Ictammolo Sella (Ichthammol)

Ichthammol is a topical anti‑inflammatory and keratolytic agent used in various dermatologic conditions.

• Ichthammol (ammonium bituminosulfonate) exerts its effect through a combination of anti‑inflammatory, antibacterial and keratolytic actions. The sulfonated oil penetrates the stratum corneum, where it modulates prostaglandin synthesis and reduces cytokine release, leading to decreased inflammation. Its mild antiseptic properties inhibit bacterial growth, while its keratolytic activity softens hyperkeratotic tissue, facilitating desquamation and drainage of pus. Additionally, the preparation creates a mildly acidic environment that further discourages microbial colonisation.
