Ferric carboxymaltose is used to treat iron deficiency anemia, a condition characterized by insufficient iron for normal red blood cell production.

• Iron deficiency anemia in chronic kidney disease: restores hemoglobin levels and reduces the need for blood transfusion.
• Iron deficiency anemia in inflammatory bowel disease: provides rapid iron repletion when oral iron is poorly absorbed.
• Iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy or postpartum (when oral iron is ineffective): corrects iron stores and improves maternal health.

• Ferric carboxymaltose delivers a stable iron(III)-carboxymaltose complex that releases elemental iron directly into the plasma after intravenous administration. The iron is then taken up by reticuloendothelial cells, incorporated into transferrin, and delivered to the bone marrow for hemoglobin synthesis, bypassing the gastrointestinal absorption pathway.

Adverse reactions may occur with intravenous iron administration.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild to moderate gastrointestinal upset.
• Headache: transient cranial discomfort.
• Dizziness: temporary light‑headedness.
• Injection site reactions: pain, erythema, or swelling.
• Flushing: brief warmth or redness.
