Imadrax Novum (Amoxicillin)

Amoxicillin is a broad‑spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in various organ systems.

• Respiratory tract infections: reduces bacterial load and resolves cough, fever and sputum production.
• Otitis media: eradicates causative organisms and improves hearing and ear pain.
• Urinary tract infections: eliminates uropathogens and relieves dysuria and frequency.
• Skin and soft tissue infections: clears infection and promotes wound healing.
• Acute bacterial sinusitis: treats sinus inflammation and alleviates congestion and facial pain.

• Amoxicillin exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to penicillin‑binding proteins located on the bacterial cell wall. This inhibits the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, weakening the cell wall and leading to osmotic lysis of susceptible Gram‑positive and some Gram‑negative organisms.

Amoxicillin is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild to moderate upset stomach.
• Diarrhea: loose stools, often self‑limiting.
• Rash: mild skin erythema or itching.
• Headache: transient tension‑type headache.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Anaphylaxis: severe allergic reaction with airway compromise.
• Clostridioides difficile‑associated diarrhea: colitis presenting with watery stools.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: severe mucocutaneous blistering.
• Serum sickness–like reaction: fever, arthralgia and rash.
• Hepatic injury: elevated liver enzymes or jaundice.
• Hematologic abnormalities: neutropenia, thrombocytopenia or hemolytic anemia.

When prescribing Amoxicillin, consider the following safety measures.

• Allergy assessment: confirm no known hypersensitivity to penicillins.
• Renal function: adjust dose in patients with severe renal impairment.
• Pregnancy: use only if the expected benefit justifies potential risk.
• Concomitant antibiotics: avoid overlapping spectrum that may promote resistance.
• Drug interactions: review concomitant use of oral contraceptives, anticoagulants and other interacting agents.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and light.
