Imatinib Betapharm (Imatinib)

Imatinib Betapharm targets abnormal tyrosine‑kinase driven cancers and is used in the following indications:

• Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML): improves hematologic and cytogenetic response and prolongs survival.
• Philadelphia chromosome‑positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL): contributes to remission when combined with chemotherapy.
• Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST): reduces tumor progression and disease recurrence.

• Imatinib selectively inhibits the BCR‑ABL fusion protein as well as the receptor tyrosine kinases c‑KIT and PDGFR. By blocking these enzymes, it prevents downstream signaling that drives malignant cell proliferation, induces apoptosis, and impairs tumor angiogenesis, thereby controlling disease progression in affected cancers.

Adverse reactions may occur with imatinib therapy and vary in frequency and severity.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild to moderate stomach upset.
• Edema: swelling of the hands, feet, or periorbital area.
• Muscle cramps: painful involuntary contractions.
• Fatigue: generalized tiredness.
• Diarrhea: loose stools occurring intermittently.
• Rash: skin irritation or erythema.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Neutropenia: marked reduction in white blood cells.
• Hepatotoxicity: elevated liver enzymes or liver injury.
• Cardiac failure: reduced heart function, especially in patients with pre‑existing disease.
• Severe fluid retention: pleural effusion or ascites.
• Hemorrhage: increased risk of bleeding.
• Tumor lysis syndrome: rapid tumor cell breakdown causing metabolic disturbances.

Before initiating therapy, clinicians should assess baseline health status and monitor patients regularly.

• Monitor blood counts: perform periodic CBC to detect cytopenias.
• Assess liver function: check hepatic enzymes before and during treatment.
• Evaluate cardiac status: perform ECG or echocardiogram in patients with cardiac risk.
• Review concomitant medications: avoid strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers.
• Pregnancy and lactation: use only if potential benefit outweighs risk; data are limited.
• Store at ambient temperature below 25°C: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and light.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole): increase imatinib exposure and toxicity.
