Imigrane (Sumatriptan)

Sumatriptan is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine and related headache disorders.

• Migraine: provides rapid relief of headache pain and associated symptoms during an acute attack.

• Cluster headache: can be used for the acute treatment of episodic cluster headache attacks.

• Sumatriptan acts as a selective agonist at serotonin 5‑HT₁B and 5‑HT₁D receptors located on intracranial blood vessels and trigeminal nerve endings. Activation of 5‑HT₁B receptors induces cranial vasoconstriction, while stimulation of 5‑HT₁D receptors inhibits release of pro‑inflammatory neuropeptides, together reducing migraine pain and associated autonomic symptoms. The drug’s high affinity for these receptor subtypes results in a rapid onset of action when administered intranasally, allowing effective symptom control within minutes.

Common Side Effects

• Hemiplegic or basilar migraine: contraindicated in patients with these migraine subtypes.
