Sumatriptan, a member of the triptan class, is used for the acute treatment of migraine.

• Sumatriptan acts as a selective agonist at serotonin 5‑HT1B and 5‑HT1D receptors located on intracranial blood vessels and trigeminal nerve endings. Activation of 5‑HT1B receptors induces cranial vasoconstriction, while stimulation of 5‑HT1D receptors inhibits release of pro‑inflammatory neuropeptides, thereby aborting migraine pain pathways. The combined vascular and neuronal effects interrupt the cascade that generates migraine headache, leading to symptom resolution within minutes to hours after dosing.

Sumatriptan may cause a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to serious.

Common Side Effects
