Indapamid Pmcs (Indapamide)

Indapamide acts on the renal tubular system to control blood pressure and fluid balance, making it useful in several cardiovascular and renal conditions.

• Hypertension: lowers systolic and diastolic pressure, helping to prevent stroke and heart attack.
• Edema associated with heart failure: promotes diuresis to reduce excess fluid and improve symptoms.
• Edema associated with renal disease: enhances urinary sodium and water excretion, alleviating swelling.

• Indapamide inhibits sodium‑chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule by blocking the Na⁺/Cl⁻ cotransporter. This leads to increased excretion of sodium and water, decreasing plasma volume and peripheral vascular resistance, which together lower arterial blood pressure and reduce fluid accumulation.

Indapamide may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to severe.

Common Side Effects

• Dizziness or light‑headedness
• Headache
• Increased urinary frequency
• Fatigue
• Nausea or abdominal discomfort
• Mild electrolyte disturbances (e.g., low potassium)

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia, hyponatremia)
• Gout attacks due to elevated uric acid
• Allergic reactions such as rash or angioedema
• Blood dyscrasias (e.g., leukopenia, thrombocytopenia)
• Pancreatitis
• Acute renal failure in susceptible individuals

• Renal function: evaluate creatinine clearance and adjust use if impaired.
• Electrolytes: check serum potassium and sodium before and during treatment.
• Diabetes: monitor blood glucose as diuretics may affect glycemic control.
• Gout: be aware of potential uric acid elevation.
• Concomitant antihypertensives: watch for additive blood‑pressure lowering effects.
