Indocollyre (Indometacin)

Indometacin ophthalmic solution is employed to manage inflammatory conditions of the eye.

• Postoperative ocular inflammation: reduces swelling and pain following eye surgery.
• Anterior uveitis: helps control inflammation of the anterior segment of the eye.
• Allergic conjunctivitis: alleviates inflammatory symptoms associated with allergic eye reactions.
• Keratitis: diminishes inflammation of the cornea in certain infectious or non‑infectious cases.

• Indometacin non‑selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase‑1 and cyclooxygenase‑2 enzymes in ocular tissues, blocking the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins. This reduction in prostaglandin synthesis decreases vascular permeability, leukocyte infiltration, and the overall inflammatory cascade within the eye, leading to less edema, pain, and redness.

Indometacin eye drops may cause local and systemic adverse reactions, which are categorized by frequency and severity.

Common Side Effects

• Burning or stinging sensation: transient discomfort upon instillation.
• Redness of the conjunctiva: mild ocular irritation.
• Tearing: increased lacrimation after use.
• Blurred vision: temporary visual disturbance.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Corneal ulceration: breakdown of corneal epithelium.
• Keratitis: inflammation of the cornea that may impair vision.

When using Indocollyre, consider the following precautions.

• Hypersensitivity: avoid use in patients with known allergy to indometacin or other NSAIDs.

• Contact lens wearers: discontinue lenses during treatment to prevent irritation.
