Infloc (Fusidic Acid)

Infloc, a topical antibiotic, is indicated for bacterial skin conditions.

• Impetigo: Reduces bacterial load and promotes healing of superficial skin lesions.
• Folliculitis: Clears infection of hair follicles and alleviates associated inflammation.
• Other susceptible skin infections: Controls bacterial proliferation and supports recovery of affected skin areas.

• Fusidic acid exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to bacterial elongation factor G (EF‑G) on the ribosome, thereby blocking the translocation step of protein synthesis. This inhibition halts bacterial growth without affecting human cells, leading to a bacteriostatic action against susceptible Gram‑positive organisms, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. The drug’s high affinity for EF‑G ensures selective inhibition, and resistance is uncommon when used appropriately.

Topical application of fusidic acid may be associated with local and, rarely, systemic adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Application site irritation: redness, itching, or burning at the site of use.
• Dry or peeling skin: mild desquamation around the treated area.
• Contact dermatitis: localized allergic skin reaction with erythema.
• Pruritus: persistent itching that may develop during treatment.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction: angioedema or anaphylaxis requiring immediate medical attention.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis: extensive skin detachment and mucosal involvement.
• Systemic toxicity: rare hepatic enzyme elevation or neutropenia with extensive use.

When using Infloc, consider the following precautions to ensure safe and effective therapy.

• Apply only to intact skin: avoid broken or ulcerated areas unless directed by a clinician.
• Limit treatment duration: do not exceed two weeks without medical review to reduce resistance risk.
• Avoid ocular or mucosal exposure: the product is not formulated for eyes, ears, or mouth.
• Do not use on large body surface areas: extensive application may increase systemic absorption.
• Discontinue if hypersensitivity occurs: stop treatment and seek medical advice if rash or swelling develops.
• Store at room temperature: keep the cream in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
