Indications & Clinical Uses

Innohep, a low molecular weight heparin, is used to prevent and treat thromboembolic conditions.

  • Deep vein thrombosis (surgical patients): prevents clot formation after surgery.
  • Acute deep vein thrombosis: facilitates clot resolution and reduces propagation.
  • Pulmonary embolism: both prevents new emboli and treats existing embolic events.
  • Acute coronary syndrome: reduces the risk of coronary artery clot formation.

How It Works

  • Tinzaparin sodium potentiates antithrombin III, enhancing its ability to inhibit factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, factor IIa (thrombin). This results in reduced generation of thrombin and fibrin, thereby limiting clot formation within the venous and arterial circulation.

Side Effects

Adverse reactions may vary in frequency and severity.

Common Side Effects

  • Injection site pain or bruising.
  • Minor bleeding such as epistaxis or gum bleeding.
  • Elevated liver enzymes.
  • Transient thrombocytopenia.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Heparin‑induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).
  • Major hemorrhage, including intracranial bleeding.
  • Spinal or epidural hematoma.
  • Severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis.

Precautions & Warnings

Use of Innohep requires careful assessment of patient‑specific risk factors.

  • Renal impairment: consider dose adjustment or monitoring.
  • History of HIT: avoid use and select an alternative anticoagulant.
  • Concomitant anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents: monitor for increased bleeding.
  • Pregnancy: use only when the benefit outweighs potential fetal risk.
  • Upcoming surgery or invasive procedures: discontinue according to clinical guidelines.
  • Store at 2-8°C: keep refrigerated, protect from light, do not freeze or shake.

Avoid Interactions

Tinzaparin sodium can interact with several drug classes, affecting bleeding risk.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

  • Other anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, direct thrombin inhibitors).
  • Antiplatelet agents (e.g., aspirin, clopidogrel).
  • Fibrinolytic therapy (e
