Intralipid is used in parenteral nutrition to address energy and essential fatty acid needs in patients unable to receive enteral feeding.

• Intralipid delivers triglyceride‑rich lipid particles that are hydrolyzed by circulating lipoprotein lipase, releasing free fatty acids that enter cellular beta‑oxidation pathways for ATP production. The emulsion also supplies essential fatty acids, such as linoleic and alpha‑linolenic acids, which cannot be synthesized endogenously and are incorporated into cell membranes and signaling molecules.

Adverse reactions may occur with intravenous lipid emulsions and should be monitored during therapy.

Common Side Effects

• Hypertriglyceridemia: elevated serum triglyceride levels.
• Fever or chills: transient temperature rise during infusion.
