Iodoten (Povidone, Iodinated)

Iodoten is a topical antiseptic used to reduce microbial contamination on the skin and superficial wounds.

• Skin antisepsis: prepares intact skin before invasive procedures by eliminating bacteria and viruses.
• Wound cleaning: removes debris and reduces infection risk in minor cuts, abrasions and superficial lacerations.
• Pre‑operative skin preparation: disinfects surgical sites to lower postoperative infection rates.

• Povidone‑iodine releases free iodine when applied to the skin. The iodine penetrates microbial cell walls, oxidizing proteins and nucleic acids, which leads to rapid denaturation of essential cellular components and cell death. This non‑specific mechanism provides activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa, making it a broad‑spectrum topical antiseptic.

Adverse reactions are generally limited to the application site, but systemic effects can occur in rare cases.

Common Side Effects

• Skin irritation: mild redness or discomfort at the application site.
• Itching: transient pruritus following contact.
• Staining: temporary brown discoloration of skin or fabrics.

Proper use of Iodoten requires attention to patient history and application conditions.

• Allergy assessment: avoid use in individuals with known iodine or povidone‑iodine hypersensitivity.
• Burned or damaged skin: do not apply to extensive burns, open wounds larger than a few centimeters, or mucous membranes.
• Thyroid disorders: use with caution in patients with hyper‑ or hypothyroidism, as iodine absorption may affect hormone balance.
• Pediatric use: limit exposure in infants and young children; follow prescriber guidance.
• Storage: Store at room temperature: keep in the original container, protect from light and moisture.

Povidone‑iodine can interact with systemic therapies that affect iodine metabolism or thyroid function.

Major Interactions (Avoid)
