Iodura De Potasiu Atb (Potassium Iodide)

Potassium Iodide is used as a thyroid blocking agent to reduce radioactive iodine uptake and to address iodine deficiency.

• Potassium Iodide delivers a high concentration of stable iodide ions that rapidly saturate the sodium‑iodide symporter in thyroid follicular cells. This competitive inhibition blocks the organification of radioactive iodine isotopes, preventing their incorporation into thyroid hormones and thereby reducing radiation dose to the gland. The excess iodide is subsequently excreted unchanged. The effect persists for several hours, after which normal iodine metabolism resumes.

Potassium Iodide may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Metallic taste: a transient metallic sensation in the mouth that usually resolves quickly.
• Nausea: mild nausea that may occur shortly after taking the dose.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: a rare, severe skin reaction characterized by blistering and detachment of the epidermis.

When using Potassium Iodide, several precautions should be observed to ensure safety and effectiveness.

• Assess iodine status: evaluate baseline iodine levels and dietary intake before initiating therapy to determine need.
• Avoid in known hypersensitivity: do not administer to patients with a documented allergy to iodide or related compounds.
• Use cautiously in thyroid disorders: monitor patients with existing hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism closely for changes.
• Monitor thyroid function: perform periodic thyroid function tests during prolonged use to detect any dysfunction early.
