Iomeron (Iomeprol)

Iomeron is an iodinated contrast agent used in diagnostic imaging to improve X‑ray attenuation of vascular and organ structures.

• Angiography: enhances visualization of blood vessels, allowing detailed assessment of arterial and venous anatomy.
• Computed tomography (CT) imaging: improves contrast between tissues, facilitating accurate diagnosis of lesions and organ pathology.
• Vascular imaging: delineates vascular pathways and perfusion, supporting evaluation of blockages, aneurysms and other circulatory conditions.

• Iomeprol contains iodine atoms that strongly absorb X‑ray photons. When administered intravenously or intra‑arterially, the iodine‑rich compound distributes within the vascular and extracellular spaces, increasing X‑ray attenuation of blood and tissues. This creates a radiopaque contrast between structures, allowing clearer delineation of vessels, organs and pathological lesions during radiographic, CT and angiographic examinations.

Iomeron may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Warmth or flushing sensation during injection.
• Metallic or salty taste in the mouth.
• Mild nausea or vomiting.
• Headache.
• Transient itching or urticaria.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with respiratory distress.
• Acute renal impairment, especially in patients with pre‑existing kidney disease.
• Hypotension or cardiovascular collapse.
• Seizures.
• Cardiac arrhythmias.

Prior to using Iomeron, clinicians should assess patient risk factors and follow appropriate safety measures.

• Assess renal function: evaluate serum creatinine and eGFR before administration.
• Review allergy history: identify prior reactions to iodinated contrast or iodine‑containing substances.
• Use the lowest effective dose: tailor volume to the specific imaging protocol.
• Monitor vital signs: observe patients during and after injection for immediate reactions.
• Avoid in patients with known iodine hypersensitivity unless benefits outweigh risks.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Iomeron can interact with other medications or substances that affect iodine load or renal function.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use of other iodinated contrast agents: may increase total iodine exposure.
• High‑dose iodine supplements or thyroid medications: can exacerbate iodine excess and affect thyroid function.
• Nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides, NSAIDs) in patients with reduced renal function: increase risk of contrast‑induced nephropathy.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Metformin in patients with impaired renal function: monitor for lactic acidosis.
• Beta‑blockers: may mask contrast‑induced tachycardia, requiring closer hemodynamic monitoring.
