Iomeron (Iomeprol)

Iomeron, an iodinated contrast agent, is employed to improve image quality in several radiographic examinations.

• Angiography: provides clear delineation of arterial and venous structures during catheter‑based studies.
• Computed Tomography (CT) imaging: increases attenuation of X‑rays, allowing better differentiation of soft tissues and lesions.
• Urography: enhances visualization of the urinary tract, facilitating detection of obstructions or abnormalities.
• Venography: improves contrast of veins to assess thrombosis or vascular malformations.

• Iomeprol contains iodine atoms that strongly absorb X‑ray photons. When administered intravenously or intra‑arterially, it distributes within the vascular compartment and extracellular fluid, creating a temporary radiopaque environment. This attenuation of X‑rays increases the contrast between blood‑filled structures and surrounding tissues, allowing detailed visualization of vascular anatomy and organ parenchyma during imaging procedures.

Iomeron may cause a range of reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Warm sensation or flushing at the injection site.
• Nausea or mild vomiting.
• Transient headache.
• Mild itching or rash.
• Temporary metallic taste.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with respiratory distress.
• Acute kidney injury, particularly in patients with pre‑existing renal impairment.
• Hypotension or cardiovascular collapse.
• Cardiac arrhythmias.
• Pulmonary edema.
• Delayed skin reactions such as erythema multiforme.

Before using Iomeron, clinicians should assess patient risk factors and monitor for adverse events.

• Renal function assessment: evaluate serum creatinine and eGFR, especially in patients with known kidney disease.
• Allergy history: screen for prior reactions to iodinated contrast media or other allergens.
• Thyroid status: consider testing in patients with hyperthyroidism, as iodine load may exacerbate condition.
• Hydration: ensure adequate fluid intake before and after administration to reduce nephrotoxicity risk.
• Concomitant nephrotoxic drugs: avoid or adjust dosing of agents such as NSAIDs or aminoglycosides.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep below 25 °C, protect from light, and retain in original container.

Iomeron can interact with certain medications, influencing safety or efficacy.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• High‑dose iodinated contrast with metformin: risk of lactic acidosis; discontinue metformin before and after administration.
• Concurrent use with other iodinated contrast agents within 24 hours: may increase iodine load and toxicity.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Diuretics (e.g., furosemide): may potentiate renal effects; monitor kidney function.
