Iomeron (Iomeprol)

Iomeron, an iodinated contrast agent, is employed in imaging procedures that require enhanced radiodensity of vascular and organ structures.

• Angiography: provides high‑contrast visualization of arterial and venous anatomy, facilitating diagnostic and interventional procedures.
• CT imaging: improves tissue differentiation and lesion detection in computed tomography scans of the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis.
• Vascular imaging: delineates vascular pathways during endovascular interventions, allowing precise navigation and assessment of blood flow.

• Iomeprol contains a high concentration of iodine atoms that absorb X‑ray photons. After intra‑arterial or intravenous injection, the iodine molecules distribute within the vascular compartment and extracellular fluid, increasing X‑ray attenuation of blood and tissues. The resulting higher radiodensity creates a contrast between vessels or organs and surrounding structures on radiographic, CT or fluoroscopic images, enabling detailed anatomical assessment.

Iomeron may be associated with a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to severe.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Acute kidney injury
• Severe hypotension

Prior to administering Iomeron, clinicians should observe several precautionary measures to minimise risk.

• Assess renal function: evaluate serum creatinine and eGFR before use.
• Screen for iodine allergy: obtain history of hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast.
• Use lowest effective dose: tailor volume to patient size and imaging requirement.
• Monitor vital signs: observe blood pressure and heart rate during and after injection.
• Avoid in severe thyroid disease: consider alternative imaging in patients with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism.
• Store below 25°C: keep in original container, protect from light and moisture.

Iomeron can interact with certain medications, influencing safety or efficacy.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Metformin: risk of lactic acidosis; discontinue before and after contrast exposure.
• Thyroid hormone therapy: excess iodine may alter hormone levels; monitor thyroid function.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Diuretics: may exacerbate renal impairment; assess kidney function.
• ACE inhibitors: potential for reduced renal perfusion; consider temporary suspension.
• NSAIDs: increase risk of contrast‑induced nephropathy; evaluate necessity.
