Iopamiro (Iopamidol)

Iopamiro, an iodinated contrast agent, is used to enhance radiographic visualization in several diagnostic procedures.

• Angiography: improves vessel delineation for accurate assessment of arterial and venous structures.
• Arthrography: provides joint space contrast to evaluate cartilage, ligaments and menisci.
• Myelography: enhances spinal canal imaging to detect nerve root compression or lesions.

• Iopamidol contains multiple iodine atoms that strongly absorb X‑ray photons. When administered intra‑arterially, intra‑articularly, or intrathecally, the iodine increases the radiodensity of blood, joint fluid or cerebrospinal fluid, respectively. This heightened attenuation creates a clear contrast between the targeted structures and surrounding tissues, allowing imaging systems to generate detailed diagnostic images. The effect is transient as the iodine is rapidly cleared by renal excretion, minimizing long‑term tissue retention.

Iopamiro may be associated with a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to severe.

Common Side Effects

• Warmth or flushing sensation during injection.
• Metallic taste in the mouth.
• Nausea or mild vomiting.
• Headache or mild dizziness.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.
• Acute kidney injury, especially in patients with pre‑existing renal impairment.
