Iopamiro (Iopamidol)

Iopamiro is an iodinated contrast agent used to improve imaging of vascular and organ structures in several radiographic procedures.

• Angiography: improves visualization of arterial and venous anatomy during diagnostic and interventional procedures.
• Computed tomography (CT) imaging: provides high‑contrast enhancement of soft tissues and vessels for detailed cross‑sectional images.

• Iopamidol contains a high concentration of iodine atoms that increase X‑ray attenuation when administered intravenously or intra‑arterially. The molecule distributes rapidly in the extracellular fluid, surrounding blood vessels and tissues, thereby creating a density difference that allows X‑ray, CT or fluoroscopic systems to produce sharply defined images of vascular structures and organ outlines.

Iopamiro may cause a range of adverse reactions following injection.

Common Side Effects

• Warmth or flushing sensation at the injection site.
• Nausea or mild vomiting.
• Transient metallic taste.

• Mild injection‑site pain or bruising.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with respiratory distress.

• Hypotension or cardiovascular collapse.
• Seizures or neurologic disturbances.
• Severe skin reactions such as Stevens‑Johnson syndrome.
• Cardiopulmonary arrest.

• Renal function assessment: evaluate baseline creatinine and eGFR before administration.
• Iodine allergy screening: avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast.
• Thyroid monitoring: be cautious in patients with hyperthyroidism or thyroid disorders.
• Hydration status: ensure adequate hydration to reduce risk of contrast‑induced nephropathy.
• Dose minimisation: use the lowest effective volume for the required imaging study.
• Store below 25°C: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and light.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use of other iodinated contrast agents: may increase total iodine exposure and toxicity.
• High‑dose iodine therapy (e.g., amiodarone): can exacerbate iodine overload and thyroid dysfunction.
• Nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides, high‑dose NSAIDs): heighten risk of acute kidney injury.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Diuretics: may alter fluid balance and affect renal clearance of contrast.
