Ipinzan (Metformin Hydrochloride, Vildagliptin)

Ipinzan is an oral antidiabetic combination that targets hyperglycaemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

• Metformin Hydrochloride reduces hepatic gluconeogenesis, decreases intestinal glucose absorption, and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity, thereby lowering blood glucose. Vildagliptin selectively inhibits dipeptidyl peptidase‑4 (DPP‑4), which prolongs the activity of endogenous incretin hormones (GLP‑1 and GIP), leading to glucose‑dependent insulin secretion and reduced glucagon release.

Common side effects of Ipinzan are generally mild and related to gastrointestinal tolerance or transient discomfort.

• Nausea: mild to moderate feeling of sickness.
• Diarrhoea: loose stools occurring intermittently.
• Abdominal discomfort: cramping or pain in the stomach area.

• Upper respiratory tract infection: mild cold‑like symptoms.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Lactic acidosis: rare but life‑threatening metabolic disturbance.
• Severe hypoglycaemia: especially when combined with other glucose‑lowering agents.
• Pancreatitis: inflammation of the pancreas presenting with abdominal pain.
• Severe skin reactions: such as Stevens‑Johnson syndrome.
• Hepatic dysfunction: abnormal liver enzymes or liver injury.
• Renal impairment: worsening kidney function, particularly in susceptible patients.
