Ipren (Ibuprofen)

Ibuprofen acts locally on inflamed tissues to relieve pain and reduce swelling.

• Ibuprofen reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase‑1 (COX‑1) and cyclooxygenase‑2 (COX‑2) enzymes in peripheral tissues, decreasing the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins. The reduced prostaglandin synthesis limits inflammation, pain signaling, and fever generation at the site of application.

Topical ibuprofen may cause local and systemic reactions.

• Contact dermatitis: intense redness, blistering or swelling persisting beyond 24 hours.
• Systemic NSAID toxicity: gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration if absorbed in large amounts.
• Renal impairment: reduced kidney function in susceptible individuals.
• Hepatotoxicity: abnormal liver enzymes with extensive use.

When using topical ibuprofen, consider the following safety measures.

• Age restriction: avoid use on children under 12 years unless directed by a healthcare professional.
• Skin integrity: do not apply to broken, infected or severely irritated skin.
• Allergies: discontinue if signs of hypersensitivity appear.
• Concomitant NSAIDs: avoid using other NSAID products simultaneously to reduce systemic exposure.
