Ipsoflog (Piroxicam)

Piroxicam is used as a topical NSAID to manage inflammatory joint disorders and related pain.

• Rheumatoid arthritis: reduces joint pain, swelling and stiffness when applied to affected areas.
• Osteoarthritis: alleviates chronic joint discomfort and improves functional mobility.
• Acute musculoskeletal pain: provides localized relief for sprains, strains and minor injuries.

• Piroxicam reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX‑1 and COX‑2) enzymes in peripheral tissues, leading to decreased synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate inflammation, pain and fever. By limiting prostaglandin production at the site of application, the drug reduces local inflammatory responses and associated discomfort.

Topical piroxicam may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and localized.

Common Side Effects

• Skin irritation: redness, itching or burning at the application site.
• Dryness: localized dryness or flaking of the skin.
• Pruritus: mild itching without rash.
• Erythema: superficial redness that usually resolves.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Systemic hypersensitivity: rare systemic reactions such as urticaria or angioedema.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: extremely rare but serious skin reaction.
• Toxic epidermal necrolysis: rare, life‑threatening skin disorder.
• Photosensitivity: heightened skin reaction to sunlight.

When using topical piroxicam, consider the following safety measures.

• Contraindication: avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to piroxicam or other NSAIDs.
• Pregnancy: use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk; consult a healthcare professional.
• Breastfeeding: limited data; discuss risks with a clinician before use.
• Application area: limit to intact skin; do not apply to open wounds or mucous membranes.
• Drug interactions: review concomitant medications, especially systemic NSAIDs or anticoagulants, with a pharmacist.
• Store at below 25°C: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
