Irbesartan Aurobindo (Irbesartan)

Irbesartan is used to treat conditions related to the renin‑angiotensin system, primarily hypertension and diabetic kidney disease.

• Hypertension: lowers elevated blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack.
• Diabetic nephropathy: slows progression of kidney damage in patients with type 2 diabetes, helping preserve renal function.
• Proteinuria: reduces urinary protein excretion associated with chronic kidney disease.

• Irbesartan selectively blocks the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor, preventing angiotensin II‑mediated vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. This inhibition leads to relaxation of vascular smooth muscle, decreased peripheral resistance, and reduced sodium and water retention, thereby lowering blood pressure and providing renal protection.

Common Side Effects

• Dizziness: sensation of light‑headedness, especially after standing.
• Headache: mild to moderate pain in the head region.
• Fatigue: feeling unusually tired or weak.
• Upper respiratory infection: symptoms such as sore throat or nasal congestion.
• Nausea: mild stomach upset or urge to vomit.
• Diarrhea: loose stools occurring intermittently.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Angioedema: swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat that may compromise breathing.
• Hyperkalemia: elevated potassium levels that can cause cardiac rhythm disturbances.
• Acute renal impairment: sudden decline in kidney function, indicated by rising creatinine.
• Hepatic injury: signs of liver damage such as jaundice or abnormal liver enzymes.
• Severe hypotension: markedly low blood pressure leading to fainting or shock.

Patients should be monitored regularly while taking Irbesartan.
