Iron Sucrose Injection (Iron Sucrose USP) 100mg/5ml

Iron Sucrose Injection is indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, particularly in patients who cannot tolerate or respond to oral iron therapy. It is also used in the management of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease and other conditions where rapid iron replenishment is necessary.

• Iron deficiency anemia: Provides a rapid and effective means of replenishing iron stores in patients who cannot absorb iron orally.
• Anemia of chronic kidney disease: Helps restore iron levels in patients undergoing dialysis or with non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease.
• Anemia associated with pregnancy: Supports the increased iron demands during pregnancy, especially in cases of severe anemia.
• Anemia due to gastrointestinal malabsorption: Bypasses the gastrointestinal tract to deliver iron directly into the bloodstream, ideal for patients with malabsorption syndromes.

• Iron Sucrose Injection dissociates into iron and sucrose upon intravenous administration. The iron is then transferred to the liver and bone marrow, where it binds to ferritin and transferrin. Transferrin carries the iron within the plasma and extracellular fluid, delivering it to the bone marrow for hemoglobin synthesis in red blood cells. This process effectively replenishes iron stores and supports the production of hemoglobin, addressing iron deficiency anemia.

Iron Sucrose Injection is generally well-tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects. Common side effects typically resolve with appropriate management and do not require discontinuation of therapy.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: Mild to moderate nausea may occur during or after administration.
• Headache: Some patients may experience headaches, which are usually transient.
• Dizziness: Lightheadedness or dizziness may occur, particularly during or shortly after infusion.
• Joint aches: Mild to moderate joint pain may be experienced by some patients.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Hypotension: Severe drops in blood pressure may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

• Cardiovascular collapse: In rare cases, rapid infusion can lead to cardiovascular collapse, requiring immediate medical intervention.
• Edema: Fluid retention and swelling may occur, usually managed with supportive care.
• Paresthesia: Numbness or tingling sensations may be experienced, typically resolving without intervention.

Iron Sucrose Injection should be administered with caution to ensure patient safety and efficacy. Precautions include monitoring for adverse reactions and ensuring proper administration techniques.

• Administration: Administer intravenously as directed by a healthcare professional, either undiluted over 2-5 minutes or diluted in 0.9% saline and infused over 15-60 minutes.
• Monitoring: Regularly monitor patients for signs of hypersensitivity or adverse reactions during and after administration.
• Hypersensitivity: Patients with known hypersensitivity to iron sucrose or any of its components should avoid this medication.
• Pregnancy: Use during pregnancy should be based on a careful risk-benefit assessment, as it is categorized as Pregnancy Category B.
• Breastfeeding: Caution is advised for use during breastfeeding, as the effects on infants are not fully established.
• Store at 20–25°C: Protect from light and do not freeze.
