Isoptin (Verapamil Hydrochloride)

Isoptin (verapamil) is used in cardiovascular therapy to control blood pressure, relieve angina, and regulate abnormal heart rhythms.

• Hypertension: lowers systemic blood pressure by vasodilation of arterial smooth muscle.
• Angina pectoris: reduces myocardial oxygen demand and improves coronary blood flow, relieving chest pain.
• Supraventricular tachyarrhythmias: slows atrioventricular nodal conduction, helping to restore normal heart rhythm.

• Verapamil blocks L‑type calcium channels in cardiac and vascular smooth‑muscle cells, decreasing calcium influx. This reduces myocardial contractility, slows conduction through the atrioventricular node, and causes peripheral vasodilation, collectively lowering blood pressure and alleviating angina while stabilizing cardiac rhythm. The inhibition of calcium entry also diminishes automaticity in the sino‑atrial node, contributing to its antiarrhythmic effect.
