Isopto Flucon (Fluorometholone)

Isopto Flucon is a glucocorticoid eye drop used to manage inflammatory conditions of the eye.

• Post‑operative ocular inflammation: reduces swelling and discomfort after eye surgery.
• Allergic conjunctivitis: alleviates redness, itching and swelling caused by allergens.
• Anterior uveitis: controls intra‑ocular inflammation and pain in the front segment of the eye.

• Fluorometholone binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors in ocular tissues, modulating gene transcription to suppress the production of inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes. This inhibition diminishes vascular permeability and cellular infiltration, leading to reduced ocular inflammation and edema.

Fluorometholone may cause a range of ocular adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Blurred vision: transient loss of visual clarity after instillation.
• Eye irritation: burning or stinging sensation on the ocular surface.
• Increased tear production: watery eyes following use.
• Conjunctival hyperemia: mild redness of the eye.
• Elevated intraocular pressure: modest rise detectable on routine check.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Secondary glaucoma: significant pressure rise that can damage optic nerve.
• Cataract formation: development of lens opacity with prolonged therapy.
• Severe allergic reaction: swelling, itching, or rash extending beyond the eye.
• Endophthalmitis: rare intra‑ocular infection requiring urgent medical attention.

Before using Isopto Flucon, consider the following safety measures.

• Monitor intraocular pressure: patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension need regular pressure checks.
• Limit duration of therapy: avoid long‑term use unless specifically directed by an ophthalmologist.
• Avoid use in active ocular infection: corticosteroids can worsen bacterial, viral, or fungal eye infections.
• Review systemic steroid use: concurrent systemic glucocorticoids may increase systemic side‑effects.
