• Itraconazole inhibits the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14α‑demethylase, a cytochrome P450–dependent protein essential for converting lanosterol to ergosterol. By blocking this step, the drug disrupts the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability and inhibition of fungal growth. The resulting depletion of ergosterol compromises cell integrity, preventing fungal proliferation.
