Ivermectin is an antiparasitic agent that acts on a variety of helminth and ectoparasite infections.

  • Onchocerciasis (river blindness): eliminates microfilariae, reducing skin and ocular lesions.
  • Strongyloidiasis: eradicates intestinal larvae, preventing chronic infection.
  • Scabies: kills Sarcoptes mites, relieving itching and skin lesions.
  • Lice infestations: destroys head and body lice, halting transmission.
  • Other helminth infections: provides broad-spectrum activity against several nematodes.

How It Works

  • Ivermectin binds selectively to glutamate‑gated chloride channels found in the nervous and muscular systems of parasites. This binding increases the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, causing hyperpolarization, paralysis, and ultimately death of the parasite while having minimal effect on mammalian cells due to the absence of these channels in humans.

Side Effects

Ivermectin is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.
