Ivermectin is an antiparasitic agent used to treat a range of helminthic and ectoparasitic infections.

• Ivermectin binds selectively to glutamate‑gated chloride channels that are present in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This binding increases the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, causing hyperpolarization, paralysis, and ultimately death of the parasite. Mammalian cells lack these channels, which accounts for the drug’s selective toxicity toward parasites. The drug’s high affinity for these channels results in rapid immobilization of the parasite, facilitating its removal by the host immune system.

Ivermectin is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions have been reported.
