Izovag (Isoconazole Nitrate)

Izovag is an azole antifungal used to manage fungal infections of the vagina.

• Vulvovaginal candidiasis: reduces fungal load and relieves itching, burning and discharge.
• Acute candidal vaginitis: provides rapid symptom relief and eradicates the infection.
• Recurrent yeast infection prophylaxis: helps prevent recurrence when used as directed.

• Isoconazole Nitrate inhibits fungal lanosterol 14α‑demethylase (CYP51), blocking the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol. This disruption impairs ergosterol synthesis, compromising the fungal cell membrane integrity and leading to cell death, thereby treating the infection.

Local application of Izovag may cause mild to moderate reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Vaginal irritation: mild burning or stinging sensation.
• Itching: localized pruritus at the application site.
• Discharge: increased vaginal secretions.
• Unpleasant odor: temporary change in vaginal smell.
• Mild allergic reaction: redness or rash.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction: swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing.
• Anaphylaxis: rapid onset of systemic hypersensitivity.
• Persistent severe irritation: prolonged burning or ulceration.
• Secondary bacterial infection: signs of bacterial overgrowth.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: rare severe skin reaction.
• Toxic epidermal necrolysis: extremely rare life‑threatening skin condition.
