Potassium Iodide acts on thyroid iodine uptake pathways and is indicated for the following conditions:

• Thyroid protection against radioactive iodine exposure: Provides stable iodine that saturates the thyroid, reducing radioactive iodine absorption.
• Prevention/treatment of iodine deficiency: Supplies essential iodine to support normal thyroid hormone synthesis.
• Pre‑operative preparation for thyroid surgery: Helps stabilize thyroid function before surgical intervention.

• Potassium Iodide supplies a source of stable iodide ions that are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The iodide pool saturates the sodium‑iodide symporter in thyroid follicular cells, thereby competitively inhibiting the uptake of radioactive iodine isotopes and limiting thyroid radiation exposure. It also fulfills the physiological iodine requirement for thyroid hormone production.

Potassium Iodide may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.
