Jodocur (Povidone, Iodinated)

Jodocur (povidone‑iodine) is used for antiseptic skin and mucosal applications.

• Skin antisepsis: reduces microbial load on intact or abraded skin before procedures.
• Mouth and throat antisepsis: lowers bacterial count in oral cavity to prevent infection.
• Wound cleansing: helps cleanse superficial wounds and minor cuts by destroying pathogens.

• Povidone‑iodine releases free iodine from its complex, allowing iodine to penetrate microbial cell walls. The iodine rapidly oxidizes proteins, nucleic acids and fatty acids, disrupting essential cellular functions and leading to irreversible cell death of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa.

Adverse reactions may occur with topical use of povidone‑iodine.

Common Side Effects

• Skin irritation: mild redness at the application site.
• Stinging sensation: brief burning feeling upon contact.
• Temporary discoloration: brown staining of skin or mucosa that fades.
• Itching: mild pruritus in some users.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction: anaphylaxis or angioedema requiring emergency care.
• Contact dermatitis: persistent rash that may need medical treatment.
• Thyroid dysfunction: abnormal thyroid hormone levels with extensive or prolonged use.

• Iodine allergy: avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone‑iodine.
• Thyroid disease: use cautiously in individuals with thyroid disorders, as systemic absorption may affect hormone balance.
• Large surface area: limit prolonged application over extensive skin areas to reduce systemic iodine load.
• Eyes and mucous membranes: keep away from eyes; if contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
• Neonates: avoid routine use in infants younger than one month unless directed by a clinician.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in original container, protect from light and moisture.

Povidone‑iodine may interact with other iodine‑containing products and certain systemic therapies.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Radioactive iodine therapy: increased iodine load can interfere with treatment efficacy.
• Thyroid hormone replacement: may alter absorption and effectiveness of levothyroxine.
• Lithium therapy: excess iodine can potentiate lithium toxicity.
