Jox (Allantoin, Povidone, Iodinated)

Jox is used as an oromucosal antiseptic to control microbial growth in the oral cavity and to promote healing of mucosal lesions.

• Oral mucosal infections: reduces microbial load and supports resolution of infection.
• Mouth ulcers: alleviates pain and accelerates tissue healing.
• Gingivitis: decreases bacterial plaque and inflammation of the gums.
• Dental plaque control: helps control plaque formation and prevents progression to periodontitis.

• Povidone‑iodine releases free iodine that penetrates microbial cell walls, oxidizing proteins and nucleic acids, which leads to rapid cell death. Povidone acts as a carrier, stabilising iodine and prolonging its release on the mucosal surface. Allantoin stimulates epithelial cell proliferation and tissue repair, enhancing mucosal regeneration after the antiseptic action.

Adverse reactions to Jox are generally mild and related to its antiseptic components, but rare serious events can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Local irritation or burning sensation.
• Metallic taste.
• Staining of oral tissues or teeth.
• Mild hypersensitivity rash.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Anaphylactic reaction.
• Thyroid dysfunction from iodine absorption.
• Severe mucosal ulceration.

When using Jox, consider the following precautions to minimise risk and ensure optimal effectiveness.

• Allergy assessment: confirm no known allergy to iodine or povidone before use.
• Iodine sensitivity: avoid in patients with thyroid disorders or iodine hypersensitivity.
• Duration of use: limit application to the prescribed period to prevent mucosal irritation.
• Oral hygiene: advise rinsing mouth with water after treatment to reduce staining.
• Pediatric use: use under professional supervision in children.
• Store at room temperature: keep in original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Jox may interact with certain systemic medications and other topical agents; awareness of these interactions helps prevent adverse outcomes.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Levothyroxine therapy: iodine can alter thyroid hormone levels.
• Antithyroid drugs (e.g., methimazole): may reduce efficacy of iodine antiseptic.
• Lithium: increased risk of thyroid dysfunction.
• Radioactive iodine treatment: iodine load may interfere with diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
• Other iodine‑containing products: cumulative iodine exposure.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium: may affect absorption if oral solution is swallowed.
• Other oral antiseptics (chlorhexidine): potential additive irritation.
• Systemic corticosteroids: may mask local irritation signs.
• Chemotherapeutic agents affecting mucosal integrity: monitor for enhanced toxicity.
