Kalijev Jodid Serb, an iodide, acts on the thyroid gland to prevent uptake of radioactive iodine and to address iodine deficiency.

• Potassium iodide delivers a high concentration of iodide ions that rapidly saturate the sodium‑iodide symporter in thyroid follicular cells. This saturation blocks the organification of any subsequently ingested radioactive iodine, preventing its incorporation into thyroid hormones and thereby reducing radiation dose to the gland. The excess iodide is then excreted primarily via the kidneys. The process is transient, lasting until the iodide pool is depleted, after which normal iodine metabolism resumes.

Potassium iodide may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.
