Kaliumklorid Orifarm (Potassium Chloride)

Kaliumklorid Orifarm is an oral electrolyte used to correct low potassium levels in several clinical situations.

• Hypokalemia: restores serum potassium to the normal range, reducing muscle weakness and cardiac irregularities.
• Potassium deficiency: replenishes body potassium stores during prolonged losses such as diarrhoea or vomiting.
• Diuretic‑induced potassium loss: prevents depletion of potassium when patients are on potassium‑wasting diuretics.

• Potassium chloride dissociates after oral absorption, delivering potassium ions that increase extracellular potassium concentration. The rise in serum potassium restores the normal electrochemical gradient across cell membranes, stabilising membrane potential and supporting normal nerve, muscle and cardiac function.

Kaliumklorid Orifarm may cause adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild stomach upset after ingestion.
• Abdominal discomfort: cramping or pain in the abdomen.
• Diarrhoea: loose stools occurring shortly after dosing.
• Taste disturbance: metallic or salty taste in the mouth.
• Vomiting: occasional emesis, usually mild.
• Constipation: reduced bowel movements in some patients.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Hyperkalaemia: dangerously high serum potassium that can affect heart rhythm.
• Cardiac arrhythmia: irregular heartbeat potentially leading to palpitations or syncope.
• Severe allergic reaction: rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
• Muscle weakness: profound weakness indicating excess potassium.
• Hypotension: low blood pressure in susceptible individuals.
• Metabolic acidosis: rare disturbance of acid‑base balance.

When prescribing Kaliumklorid Orifarm, clinicians should consider several safety measures.

• Serum potassium monitoring: check levels before initiating therapy and periodically thereafter.
• Renal function assessment: adjust dose or avoid use in patients with severe renal impairment.
• Cardiac disease caution: avoid rapid correction in patients with existing arrhythmias.
• Hyperkalaemia avoidance: do not use if serum potassium is already elevated.
• Concomitant drug review: evaluate other potassium‑containing medications.
