Kamparspirts (Camphor, Racemic)

Kamparspirts, a topical counterirritant, is used to alleviate discomfort in musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions.

• Minor muscle aches: provides temporary soothing of soreness and stiffness in superficial muscles.
• Joint and rheumatic pain: helps reduce localized pain and stiffness associated with arthritic joints.
• Cough (chest rub): offers a cooling sensation that can ease cough symptoms when applied to the chest.

• Muscle strains: creates a warming sensation that may help reduce discomfort from mild muscle strains.

• Camphor acts on cutaneous sensory nerves by stimulating transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, particularly TRPV1 and TRPA1. Activation of these receptors produces a cooling or warming sensation that competes with deeper nociceptive signals, thereby reducing the perception of pain. The counterirritant effect also promotes local vasodilation, enhancing heat dispersion and providing a soothing feeling on the skin. These actions are localized to the application site and do not involve systemic absorption at therapeutic doses.

Camphor applied topically may cause a range of skin‑related reactions, varying from mild to rare serious events.

• Avoid broken skin: do not apply on cuts, abrasions or irritated areas.
• Limit exposure: use only the recommended amount and avoid occlusive dressings.
• Pediatric use: keep out of reach of children; not for use on infants without medical advice.
• Sensitivity testing: perform a small patch test before widespread application.
• Drug interactions: do not combine with other topical irritants or heating pads on the same area.
• Store below 25°C: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
