Ketazed (Ketotifen Hydrogen Fumarate)

• Ketazed is an ophthalmic antihistamine used to manage allergic eye conditions. It works by stabilising mast cells and blocking H1 receptors in the conjunctiva.
• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces eye redness, swelling and itching caused by allergens.
• Ocular itching: provides rapid relief from itch sensations in the eye.
• Redness due to allergic eye disease: diminishes hyperemia and discomfort associated with allergic inflammation.

• Ketotifen hydrogen fumarate acts as both a mast cell stabiliser and an H1 histamine receptor antagonist. By preventing degranulation of mast cells, it reduces the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, leukotrienes and prostaglandins. Concurrently, it blocks H1 receptors on conjunctival blood vessels and nerves, limiting vasodilation and sensory nerve activation, which together alleviate ocular allergy symptoms.

Ketazed may cause local ocular reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Burning or stinging sensation upon instillation.
• Temporary blurred vision.
• Mild eye irritation or foreign‑body feeling.
• Conjunctival hyperemia (redness).

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Allergic reaction with swelling of the eyelids or periorbital area.
• Severe eye pain or photophobia.
• Corneal ulceration or keratitis.
• Sudden loss of vision.
• Persistent inflammation requiring medical attention.

• When using Ketazed, consider the following safety measures.
• Avoid use with contact lenses: remove lenses before and after application.
• Discontinue if severe irritation occurs: seek ophthalmic evaluation.
• Limit duration of use: consult a clinician if symptoms persist beyond one week.
• Keep out of reach of children: accidental ingestion may cause systemic effects.
• Store at room temperature below 25°C: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Ketazed may interact with other ophthalmic or systemic agents.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use of other topical antihistamine eye drops: may increase local irritation.
• Combination with ocular vasoconstrictors (e.g., naphazoline): risk of excessive vasoconstriction.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Systemic antihistamines (e.g., cetirizine): additive sedative effect is unlikely but monitor for increased dryness.
• Topical non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory eye drops: may enhance ocular discomfort.
• Preservative‑containing eye solutions: monitor for cumulative preservative toxicity.
