Ketazed (Ketotifen Hydrogen Fumarate)

Ketazed is an ophthalmic antihistamine used to manage allergic conditions of the eye.

• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces itching, redness and watery discharge caused by allergen exposure.
• Seasonal allergic eye disease: provides relief from seasonal pollen‑induced ocular symptoms.
• Ocular itching and redness due to allergy: stabilises mast cells to prevent release of inflammatory mediators.

• Ketotifen hydrogen fumarate acts as a selective H1‑histamine receptor antagonist while also stabilising mast cells in ocular tissues. By blocking H1 receptors, it prevents histamine‑mediated vasodilation and itching, and mast‑cell stabilization inhibits the release of prostaglandins, leukotrienes and other inflammatory mediators, thereby reducing ocular allergy symptoms.

Ketazed may cause local and systemic adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Burning or stinging sensation in the eye
• Transient blurred vision
• Mild ocular redness
• Dry eye sensation
• Headache
• Temporary eyelid swelling

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) affecting the eye or systemic
• Corneal ulceration or epithelial defect
• Persistent intraocular pressure elevation
• Acute iritis or uveitis
• Vision loss
• Contact lens intolerance

Ketazed should be used with awareness of specific safety considerations.

• Hypersensitivity: avoid if the patient has known allergy to ketotifen or any formulation component.
• Glaucoma: use with caution and monitor intraocular pressure.
• Contact lenses: do not wear lenses during treatment; remove before instillation and wait before reinserting.
• Driving: advise patients to avoid operating machinery if vision is blurred after dosing.
• Storage: Store at room temperature: keep in the original container, protect from light and moisture.

Ketazed may interact with other ophthalmic or systemic agents.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use of multiple ophthalmic antihistamines or mast‑cell stabilisers: increased risk of ocular irritation.
• Topical ophthalmic corticosteroids: may mask signs of infection or delay healing.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Systemic antihistamines or sedatives: additive central nervous system effects such as drowsiness.
• Drugs that prolong QT interval: potential additive cardiac risk, monitor ECG if clinically indicated.
• Other ocular lubricants containing preservatives: may enhance local irritation.
