Ketonova (Ketoconazole)

Ketoconazole is an imidazole antifungal that targets dermatophyte and yeast infections of the skin.

• Ketoconazole inhibits the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14α‑demethylase, a key component of the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. By blocking this enzyme, the drug disrupts the production of ergosterol, an essential sterol for fungal cell membrane integrity, leading to increased membrane permeability and ultimately fungal cell death. The accumulation of toxic sterol intermediates further compromises cellular functions, and the selective inhibition spares human cells because they rely on cholesterol rather than ergosterol.

Topical ketoconazole may cause local skin reactions and, rarely, systemic adverse events.
