Klexane (Enoxaparin Sodium)

Enoxaparin sodium is used as an anticoagulant to inhibit clot formation in venous and arterial thromboembolic conditions.

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): prevents clot extension and recurrence in patients at risk.
• Pulmonary embolism (PE): treats and reduces the risk of new embolic events.
• Haemodialysis: provides anticoagulation to prevent circuit clotting during treatment.

• Enoxaparin sodium binds to antithrombin III, markedly enhancing its inhibition of factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, factor IIa (thrombin). This selective blockade interrupts the coagulation cascade, decreasing thrombin generation and fibrin clot formation, resulting in a predictable anticoagulant effect compared with unfractionated heparin.

• Pregnancy: category B, but weigh maternal benefits against potential fetal risks.
