Klindamicin Mip (Clindamycin)

Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

• Clindamycin binds to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting the translocation step of protein synthesis. By preventing peptide chain elongation, it stops bacterial growth (bacteriostatic) and at higher concentrations can be bactericidal. The drug is active against many Gram‑positive cocci and anaerobes, and its activity is not affected by beta‑lactamase enzymes. It penetrates well into bone and abscess fluid, allowing therapeutic levels at infection sites.

Clindamycin may cause a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to severe.

Common Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal upset: nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain.
• Diarrhea: often mild and self‑limiting.
• Taste alteration: metallic or bitter taste.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Clostridioides difficile colitis: severe watery diarrhea that may be life‑threatening.
• Severe allergic reaction: anaphylaxis, facial swelling, or bronchospasm.
• Hepatotoxicity: elevated liver enzymes or jaundice.

• Assess allergy history: avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to lincosamides.
• Evaluate infection type: reserve for infections caused by susceptible organisms to limit resistance.
• Monitor gastrointestinal health: patients with prior C. difficile infection are at higher risk.

• Store at ambient temperature: keep below 25°C, retain original packaging, and protect from moisture.
