Klion (Metronidazole)

Klion is a nitroimidazole antibiotic used to treat infections caused by anaerobic microorganisms and certain protozoa.

• Bacterial vaginosis: reduces symptoms and eradicates the causative anaerobic bacteria.
• Trichomoniasis: eliminates the protozoan parasite responsible for the infection.
• Amoebiasis: clears intestinal Entamoeba histolytica infection.
• Giardiasis: treats Giardia lamblia intestinal infection.
• Anaerobic intra‑abdominal infections: controls mixed anaerobic bacterial populations in the abdomen.

• Metronidazole enters susceptible anaerobic microorganisms and protozoa, where its nitro group is reduced to reactive intermediates. These intermediates bind to DNA, causing strand breakage and inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis, ultimately leading to cell death of the targeted pathogens.

Common side effects are generally mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild to moderate stomach upset.
• Metallic taste: a characteristic metallic sensation in the mouth.
• Diarrhea: loose stools occurring during therapy.
• Headache: mild to moderate head pain.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Seizures: rare neurologic events requiring immediate medical attention.
• Peripheral neuropathy: tingling or numbness in extremities.
• Severe allergic reactions: including Stevens‑Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Klion should be used with awareness of specific safety considerations.

• Pregnancy: Category B; use only when clearly needed.
• Breastfeeding: Generally compatible, but monitor infant for adverse effects.
• Alcohol: Avoid concurrent alcohol consumption due to disulfiram‑like reaction.
• Renal impairment: Dose adjustment may be required in severe renal dysfunction.
• Hepatic disease: Use with caution in patients with liver impairment.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and light.

Metronidazole may interact with several medicines; some interactions require avoidance, others monitoring.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Alcohol: can cause severe nausea, vomiting, and flushing.
• Warfarin: may increase anticoagulant effect and bleeding risk.
• Lithium: concurrent use may raise lithium serum concentrations.
• Cimetidine: can increase metronidazole plasma levels.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Phenobarbital: may reduce metronidazole efficacy.
• Carbamazepine: may decrease plasma concentrations of metronidazole.
• Oral contraceptives: may reduce hormonal contraceptive effectiveness.
