Kreon (Pancreas Powder)

Kreon is used in the management of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, a condition that impairs digestion of nutrients.

• Chronic pancreatitis: aids nutrient absorption by supplementing deficient pancreatic enzymes.

• Post‑pancreatic surgery: restores enzymatic activity following resection of pancreatic tissue.

• Kreon contains a mixture of pancreatic enzymes—lipase, amylase and protease—that are released in the duodenum. The enzymes hydrolyze dietary triglycerides, starches and proteins, compensating for the lack of endogenous secretion in exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. By providing exogenous catalytic activity, the preparation facilitates the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, thereby reducing steatorrhea and malnutrition. The enzyme blend is enteric‑coated to protect activity from gastric acid and is timed to coincide with meals.

Like other pancreatic enzyme supplements, Kreon may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

• Avoid in known pork protein allergy: Kreon contains porcine‑derived enzymes.

Kreon can interact with other medicines; awareness of the interaction level helps manage therapy.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium: may bind enzymes and reduce efficacy.
• Proton pump inhibitors: can alter gastric pH, potentially decreasing enzyme activity.
• Cholestyramine or other bile‑acid sequestrants: may bind the enzymes and diminish absorption.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Oral contraceptives: monitor for possible reduced effectiveness.
• Warfarin: observe INR values as gastrointestinal changes may affect vitamin K absorption.
