• Levocarnitine is the biologically active L‑isomer of carnitine that functions as a carrier molecule for long‑chain fatty acids. Inside cells it forms acyl‑carnitine esters, which are shuttled across the inner mitochondrial membrane by the carnitine‑acylcarnitine translocase. This transport enables β‑oxidation of fatty acids within mitochondria, generating acetyl‑CoA for the citric acid cycle and ATP production, while also facilitating removal of excess acyl groups.
