Lacipil (Lacidipine)

Lacidipine is used primarily in the management of hypertension, a condition characterized by chronically elevated arterial pressure.

• Hypertension: reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure by causing vasodilation of peripheral arteries.

• Lacidipine selectively inhibits L-type calcium channels on vascular smooth‑muscle cells. By blocking calcium influx, it prevents contraction of the smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of arterial walls, decreased peripheral vascular resistance, and ultimately a reduction in systemic blood pressure.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe hypotension: marked drop in blood pressure that may cause fainting.
• Angioedema: swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Myocardial infarction: rare occurrence of heart attack.
• Hepatic enzyme elevation: abnormal liver function tests.
• Allergic reactions: rash, pruritus, or anaphylaxis.
• Cardiac arrhythmias: irregular heart rhythms.

Before initiating therapy with Lacipil, clinicians should assess patient‑specific factors and monitor for potential complications.

• Blood pressure monitoring: check regularly to ensure therapeutic response and avoid excessive lowering.
