Lacosamide Alembic (Lacosamide)

Lacosamide is an anticonvulsant that acts on neuronal sodium channels to control seizure activity. It is indicated for the following conditions:

• Partial‑onset seizures: reduces frequency and severity of focal seizures.
• Epilepsy (adjunctive therapy): provides additional seizure control when used with other antiepileptic drugs.
• Refractory focal epilepsy: offers an alternative option for patients who have not responded adequately to other treatments.

• Lacosamide enhances the slow inactivation phase of voltage‑gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes. By stabilizing hyper‑excitable neuronal membranes, it diminishes repetitive firing of neurons that underlies seizure generation, thereby providing antiepileptic effects without significantly affecting normal neuronal conduction.

Lacosamide may cause a range of adverse reactions. Patients should be informed of both common and serious possibilities.

Common Side Effects

• Dizziness: sensation of light‑headedness or unsteadiness.
• Fatigue: persistent tiredness or lack of energy.
• Nausea: upset stomach often accompanied by an urge to vomit.
• Headache: mild to moderate cranial pain.
• Diplopia: transient double vision.
• Blurred vision: temporary visual acuity changes.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Suicidal ideation: emergence of thoughts of self‑harm.
• Cardiac conduction abnormalities: PR‑interval prolongation or arrhythmias.
• Severe skin reactions: Stevens‑Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.
• Hypersensitivity: rash, swelling, or anaphylaxis.
• Hepatic dysfunction: elevated liver enzymes or hepatitis.
• Hematologic abnormalities: leukopenia or thrombocytopenia.
