Lacosamide Ucb (Lacosamide)

Lacosamide is an anticonvulsant indicated for seizure disorders that involve abnormal neuronal firing.

• Partial‑onset seizures: reduces seizure frequency when added to existing antiepileptic regimens.
• Focal seizures with secondary generalization: provides adjunctive control of seizure activity.
• Epilepsy adjunct therapy: enhances overall seizure management in patients whose seizures are not fully controlled by other medications.

• Lacosamide enhances the slow inactivation of voltage‑gated sodium channels, which stabilizes hyperexcitable neuronal membranes and diminishes repetitive neuronal firing. By selectively targeting the sodium channel's slow inactivation state, it reduces the propagation of epileptiform activity without markedly affecting normal neuronal conduction.

Lacosamide may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to serious.

Common Side Effects

• Dizziness: sensation of light‑headedness or unsteadiness.
• Nausea: mild to moderate stomach upset.
• Fatigue: feeling unusually tired or weak.
• Headache: mild to moderate pain in the head.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Cardiac arrhythmia: irregular heart rhythm, especially PR‑interval prolongation.
• Severe skin reactions: such as Stevens‑Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.
• Suicidal thoughts: emergence of depressive symptoms or suicidal ideation.
• Hepatic dysfunction: signs of liver injury including jaundice.
