Lactuflor (Lactulose)

• Lactulose is an osmotic laxative used to treat conditions related to bowel motility and hepatic ammonia accumulation.
• Constipation: softens stools, increases water content in the colon, and enhances peristalsis to relieve chronic constipation and improve stool frequency.
• Hepatic encephalopathy: lowers systemic ammonia by converting it to ammonium in the colon, thereby improving mental status and reducing neurological symptoms in patients with liver disease.

• Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine. In the colon it is metabolized by bacterial flora to short‑chain fatty acids, which lower colonic pH. The resulting osmotic gradient draws water into the lumen, softening stool and stimulating peristalsis. The acidic environment also converts ammonia (NH3) to ammonium (NH4+), which is trapped and eliminated, thereby lowering systemic ammonia levels.

Lactulose may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are related to its osmotic activity in the gut.

Common Side Effects

• Bloating: sensation of abdominal fullness that may be uncomfortable.
